Dear Reader, 2 things happened at once. I was in the midst selecting the editor for a book I’ve been writing through Amplify Publishing about how people can increase their leadership impact through short-form story telling. It’s my hardest won leadership skill. In my family, we were often onto the next thing & were moving quickly. It’s filled with tons of my own stories & teaches a method for people to bring their stories to life when communicating about leadership. At the same time, Lancaster Leadership was providing a lot of resilience programming. Coming out of Covid, it seemed to be a really important topic. I had bought a few hundred copies of The 5 Practices of Highly Resilient People: Why Some Flourish When Others Fold; it was the best resilience book out there that made sense in a work environment. One day I got an email from the author, Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal, asking for us to meet on Zoom. I was terrified; for some reason, I thought she was going to be mad. Oh to the contrary. She was delighted and wanted to know what kind of work I was up to and talked about how we might be able to collaborate. I was on cloud nine to now be buddies with the “#1 International Resilience, Mental Health, & Wellbeing Expert.” Exactly seven weeks later, I was getting the first round of edits from my editor and I got an email from Dr. Taryn, she was the resilience author. She was creating a compilation book, Triumphs of Transformation. “We just had our 30th author need to bow out of the community due to medical reasons, so a seat has unexpectedly opened up, as luck would have it! I thought that given your focus and expertise on resilience, along with the opportunity to contribute to this amazing community and get to amplify the visibility of your work might be an amazing opportunity for you!” It was one of those moments where I jumped up and down and made weird little noises for a good three minutes. I am beyond thrilled to invite you to the Book Release Party at Bright Side Bookshop on Monday, November 18 at 6pm (get your ticket here & also buy a discounted book for me to sign) We are having book release/signing parties around the country and I am hosting Arizona. 6pm-7pm Resilience talk, reading & Q&A. 7pm Signing. From stunning lochs and cozy pubs to delicious haggis and the company of fellow travelers, every day brought new delights. As I prepared for another day on the trail, I couldn’t help but appreciate the simple pleasures of a good sandwich and a beautiful view. Want to know more about my recent trip to Scotland?Read here! Dear Reader, We were in the boss’s living room and were about to have a leadership team retreat. Just 7 people on this health services team. I love these cozy, informal-feeling retreats. The topic to address was feedback. They wanted to create a culture of feedback seeking, and they were concerned that so many of their staff seemed defensive when receiving feedback, and then some would gossip about it; lots of indirect communication. I asked 2 questions. Do you give more positive or...
Dear Reader, I’m sitting in our medical lab, about to host our monthly team meeting. Twenty faculty members are cramming in between their classes for this meeting. I’m the dean of education, and we have no proper meeting room, so here we are. This is 18 years ago. This is the same lab where I have been asked to do things not in my job description, like give blood for phlebotomy students learning to use needles and urine to test. Thank goodness they never gave me a surprise pregnancy...
Dear Reader, FDA & Stories 13 years ago I started a 5-year stint of flying to Washington DC one time per month for 12 days. I did this for 5 years. I was doing one-on-one coaching and teaching leadership trainings for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research for the Food and Drug Administration. I got a badge. I wore government suits. I loved every minute of it and my work felt important. There were so many important topics that could make or break them being good leaders. I taught about...
